ADOBE EQUIVALENTS

Taos in Twenty Movements

Following in the tradition of the abstract expressionist masters, from Stieglitz to Siskind, I am motivated to manifest images that capture the often-overlooked beauty of common places in a visually pleasing composition that also speaks to the profundity of metaphysical experiences. All of the present images were captured during a series of excursions to Ranchos de Taos, New Mexico from the winter of 2011 into 2012. My main focus is the expressive adobe texture and the history contained within the peeling paint and crumbling walls. Small details abound, pulling the interest to mostly neglected scenes present at the San Francisco de Asis Church and the immediate surrounding areas. Given that this church is one of the most photographed churches in the United States, I explored extreme angles and alternative viewpoints to imagine the church in a way it has not been seen before. A selection of the images that are part of the series were entered into the Frontier Fragmented Cities Photography Competition and the photograph titled Vertical Vigas won the grand prize.
